Our Story

Every great idea starts with someone who sees a need.

For St. John’s Lutheran Home, that person was Rev. Knutson.

When Rev. Knutson arrived in Albert Lea in 1943, he observed that many older adults were living in crowded homes without access to proper care. He envisioned a better way, a community where seniors could live with dignity, comfort, and connection.

By the early 1950s, Rev. Knutson and local pastors began turning that vision into reality. With the help of John Mason, Director of Social Services for the Aging, and Dr. Helen Knudsen of the Board of Health, they secured a Hill-Burton Fund grant and rallied support from 28 Lutheran congregations. Through determination and collaboration, construction began in 1961. On January 2, 1962, the first residents moved into St. John’s Lutheran Home, marking the start of a new chapter in senior care for the Albert Lea community.

Who We Are Today

More than six decades later, St. John’s remains committed to the same purpose that inspired its founding: providing exceptional, person-centered care in a warm, welcoming environment.

We believe senior living should be about choice, independence, and a sense of belonging. Today, St. John’s continues to evolve, offering modern amenities, compassionate support, and opportunities for residents to live life fully, on their own terms.

We are also proud to welcome Mark Anderson, the newly appointed Executive Director of St. John’s of Albert Lea. Mark brings more than 30 years of leadership experience, having been a licensed administrator in Minnesota since 1990, and also licensed in Washington and California. His connection to Albert Lea runs deep. Mark and his family lived here from 1999 to 2013, during which time four of their six children graduated from ALHS. He previously served as the Executive Director at Good Samaritan—Albert Lea.

Mark’s leadership, experience, and passion for senior care strengthen our mission and help guide St. John’s forward, ensuring residents continue to feel valued, supported, and truly at home.
